Since ancient times, to know own lineage was considered a sacred duty of every person. Later it became the privilege of only the elite of society at the time when much of the average people gradually lost information about their ancestors, only limited by information about not more than forefathers.

But times change and interest in genealogy in our country, already for several years running, has a strong tendency to increase. To study the origin and history of family contributes to understanding the significance of each person in society, increasing responsibility for the destiny of own kin and family.

Analysis of our company’s activity in the market of genealogical services shows that today the flow of genealogy inquiries of citizens and organizations is steadily rising. Archives of Ukraine had to include into practice more and more layers of documentary heritage that until recently almost did not use and are characterized by exceptional complexity.

Genealogy is subsidiary (special) historical discipline which studies origin and history of  kins, names and individuals, family ties, compiling genealogical trees, etc…

The word "genealogy" is of Greek origin and means the concept of "genealogical tree" and is derived from the word "gene" - "kin", "logos" - "science».

Scientists have identified general (theoretical) genealogy and practical or applied genealogy. The first one is researching genealogical ties rules, identifying the general phenomena of kins’ history, and the second one is direct studying of sources and the creating on their basis of genealogical trees, tables, generation lists, diagrams.

Idea of pre-revolutionary researchers - genealogists about high meaning of genealogy was wonderfully and deeply expressed by Father Paul of Florence: “Kin is the single body vested with the sole and complete image. It begins and ends in time. He has own rice and fall. The more completely and perfectly historical content of a kin manifested in specific representative, the less reason to expect further growth of family branch which he belongs to…

Life goal of each one is to know form of own kin, its task, the law of its growth, critical point, the correlation of individual branches, and on the background of all this things - to determine his own place in the kin and task as a member of the kin.

But usually people do not realize this things and neglect tribal self-knowledge, taking it in the worst case as idle vanity, and at best as legitimate historically obtained reason for pride”.

Researchers of their own genealogical trees should understand that genealogy is not detached from the biography, but at the same time not mixed with it.

Genealogical information as a rule is legally executed and set forth in the relevant statutory documents information that ascertains family ties and family history. To ascertain family ties it is necessary to obtain the information at least from two generations of family members.

Biographical information includes data about life and activities of one person.

Fulfilling customers' requests, our company in Ukraine’s archives mostly explores the foundations of churches of different religious consistories and civilian authorities, containing genealogical information: Church book, confessionary lists, rabbinic books, census inspection records, the main provisions on the state in the Russian Empire, police records, noble Red Books, etc…

Unfortunately year by year priceless archival documents lose their original form, therefore, in our opinion, there is obvious public demand for genealogical information and it is time to create All-Ukraine program that could determine the order of work with genealogical sources, coordinate work on their list and consistency in entering it to computer data base to prepare a single state reference system called “RODOVID”.
